A24 is in talks to produce an Anthony Bourdain biopic titled “Tony,” from Star Thrower Entertainment. Deadline reports that Dominic Sessa, best known for his role in “The Holdovers,” is in talks to star as the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. The film is being produced by Star Thrower’s Tim and Trevor White and Matt Miller, and directed by Matt Johnson. The script is written by Lou Howe and Todd Bartels, with Emily Rose serving as executive producer.
Anthony Bourdain began his cooking career in a number of Manhattan restaurants in the 1980s and 1990s, including as a chef at Brasserie Les Halles. However, he only truly rose to fame after publishing a series of articles exposing the dark side of the restaurant industry. Bourdain quickly became a star in the culinary media industry thanks to his blunt and incisive style. He hosted several TV shows, but it was the Travel Channel series “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” that made him a big star, with eight successful seasons. Bourdain committed suicide in 2018.
It is not yet clear when the “Tony” movie will be set in Bourdain’s life. Star Thrower Entertainment is no stranger to biopics, having previously produced “King Richard,” which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture and won a Best Actor award for Will Smith.
For Dominic Sessa, after his standout performance in “The Holdovers,” he received many invitations to participate in major film projects. Although he did not receive an Oscar nomination like his co-stars Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Sessa still received many compliments from critics after his film festival premiere.
Matt Johnson, who will direct “Tony,” recently made a splash with the dark comedy “Blackberry.” Johnson is repped by CAA and Chris Spicer of Akin Gump; Dominic Sessa is repped by CAA, Untitled and Steve Warren of Hansen Jacobson Teller; Matt Miller is also repped by CAA and Chris Spicer of Akin Gump. Lou Howe and Todd Bartels are repped by Mosaic and attorney Andre Des Rochers.
