A tragic selfie-related accident has left Czech gymnast Natalie Stichova dead after falling from a cliff in Germany. Natalie, 23, had been climbing a cliff to take a photo with the famous Neuschwanstein Castle in the background when she fell 80 metres to the ground. Despite being rushed to hospital, Natalie suffered irreversible brain damage and died six days later after her family decided to remove her life support. The accident happened on August 15 when Natalie was hiking the Tegelberg in Bavaria, Germany. This is a famous location with stunning views of Neuschwanstein Castle – the inspiration for the castle in Walt Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty”. While looking for the best angle, Natalie stood too close to the edge of the cliff. Natalie was with two friends and her boyfriend when the accident happened. “We will never know if she slipped or if a piece of rock on the edge of the mountain broke off,” a friend later told Czech media.
Natalie Stichova, who trained at the Sokol Pribram Gymnastics Club, often shares photos of her climbing trips on Instagram. Sadly, selfie-related accidents are not uncommon. Three weeks ago, a 14-year-old girl named Moe Sa Nay, who had 150,000 followers on social media, died after slipping while taking a selfie at the Sinywa waterfall in southeastern Myanmar. Two years ago, a 21-year-old boy named Richard Jacobson fell more than 200 meters while taking photos at a peak in the Superstition Mountains near Phoenix. And three years ago, Hong Kong influencer Sofia Cheung died while taking a selfie at her local Pineapple Mountain.
