A school shooting in Georgia, USA, has left two students and two teachers dead, while a 14-year-old student named Colt Gray was arrested by police. The incident occurred at Apalachee High School, located in Winder City, Barrow County, about 50 miles from Atlanta.

Police and first responders from multiple law enforcement agencies were on the scene after receiving reports of a shooting at around 9:30 a.m. local time. The school was placed on lockdown and students were asked to take shelter in the football stadium. The lockdown was lifted an hour later and students were allowed to return to their families.

Police confirmed that Colt Gray, despite being a teenager, will be prosecuted as an adult. According to Chris Hosey, Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the investigation is still ongoing with more interviews and evidence collected at the scene.

Many students witnessed and endured the terrifying moment when the gunfire rang out. Camille Nelms, a student at the school, said she cried as the incident unfolded in her classroom, as her teacher and classmates tried to take cover in a corner. Another student, Jacob King, said he heard about 10 gunshots while he was dozing off during a world history class. He didn’t believe it until he heard police telling someone to put down their guns.

The mother of another student, Ashley Enoh, received a text message from her brother, a senior at the school, saying, “Just wanted you to know, I love you.” When asked in a family chat group, her brother confirmed that there was a gunman at the school.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith described the incident as “pure evil” and expressed his heartache for the students and the community. He also did not know the motive for the attack or whether the victims were specifically targeted. He stressed that love will triumph over hate in this community.

Gray surrendered his weapon after being confronted by a school security officer. Thanks to the quick response of law enforcement agencies, a more serious tragedy was prevented.

US President Joe Biden also expressed his grief over the tragedy and called for bipartisan gun control legislation to prevent similar heartbreaking incidents from happening.
